Global Warming Radiation from the sun passes through the Earth's atmosphere and strikes the Earth's surface.  When radiation does not bounce back into space, the heat is trapped on the surface of the Earth.  Human activity has increased the amount of heat that is trapped on the surface of the Earth.  One of these gases trapped is carbon dioxide.  The Earth's surface has increased over time causing the United Nations to take action.  The United Nations has imposed a Carbon Dioxide tax.  President Bill Clinton signed a treaty to reduce emissions into the air.  Scientists believe most of the greenhouse gases come from human activity.
Wind Power Wind power saves millions of emissions yearly.  A wind turbine is a machine rotated by the wind that converts energy.  Wind power is an energy source.
Solar Energy Solar energy is heat and light from the sun. Solar energy may be passive or active.   Solar thermal heating systems use fans to move air.  A solar hot water heating system pumps water throughout a house.  A solarium is heated by the rays from the sun.
Earth Day Earth Day was founded in 1969.  The United Nations celebrates Earth Day one day each year.  U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin founded a second Earth Day celebrated one day each year.  One of the goals of Earth Day is to create a carbon-free future.
U.S. Presidents George Washington was the first U.S. President.  The Republican Party was founded in 1854.  President Franklin D. Roosevelt spent the longest time as U.S. President.
Facts About Earthworms During freezing temperatures, earthworms will burrow down deep into the soil to avoid extreme cold.  Earthworms hatch from eggs.  Earthworms may live for many years.
Cub Scouts The Cub Scout handbook includes information on the Cub Scout motto and Cub Scout laws.  Cub Scouts wear uniforms that display their achievements.
Girl Scouts The Girl Scouts was founded in Savannah, Georgia by Juliette Gordon Low.  Daisy Girl Scouts are ages 5-6.  The highest achievements in Girl Scouts are given awards.

Facts About Cats Cats use vocalizations.  Cats have specialized teeth for tearing meat.  Cats have carnassials, or large teeth, that allow them to sheer flesh and bone.  A cat's tongue has sharp spines which help in eating and grooming.
Whitetail Deer Facts Whitetail deer hides are reddish-brown during summer and gray-brown during fall and winter.  A whitetail deer's stomach has four compartments.  Whitetail deer reproduce during October and November.  Whitetail deer rub their antlers on trees.
The Great Depression The Great Depression began in the late 1920s.  Farmers suffered greatly and people began hoarding money.
The Civil War The American Civil War was fought between the Confederate Army and the Union Army.  There were many casualties during the Civil War.  In 1862, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln ordered slaves to be freed.  The Confederate Army surrendered and ended the Civil War.  
Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus explored the Atlantic Ocean.  Columbus left Spain in 1492 with three ships named the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.  Columbus returned to Spain in 1493.  Columbus died May 20, 1506.
Aztec Civilization Tenochtitlan was located on Lake Texcoco.  Tenochtitlan is known as Mexico City today.
Presidents' Day Presidents' Day is celebrated in February.  It was originally created to celebrate George Washington's birthday.  Presidents' Day is a federal holiday celebrated in all fifty U.S. States.
Independence Day The Fourth of July is also called Independence Day.  This U.S. holiday celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence which occurred in 1776.  Thomas Jefferson was the chief writer of the Declaration of Independence.
Easter Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.  Children often receive Easter baskets of colored eggs and candy on Easter.
Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican Army victory over the French Army.  Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in May.
Mother's Day Facts Mother's Day is celebrated In May.  Mother's Day was founded by Julia Ward Howe in 1872.  Ana Jarvis celebrated the first Mother's Day in Grafton, West Virginia.
Father's Day Facts U.S. President Lyndon Johnson signed the presidential proclamation celebrating Father's Day.  In 1972 a permanent national observance of Father's Day was established.  In the U.S., Father's Day is celebrated in June.
Thanksgiving Day In the U.S., Thanksgiving is celebrated in November.  It commemorates the feast of the Pilgrims and Native Americans in the fall oVeterans Dayf 1Father's Day Facts621.  It was designated a U.S. holiday in 1789.
Veterans Day Armistice Day was created to mark the end of World War I.  In 1954, Armistice Day was replaced with Veterans Day.  Veterans Day is a U.S. Federal holiday celebrated in November.
Paul Revere In 1775, Paul Revere made his famous "Midnight Ride".  It is often written that Paul Revere shouted "The British are coming"!
